New Bible Society youth worker
BRINGING THE OLD STORY TO A NEW GENERATION
Fiona Baker
A new youth development manager has been appointed by the Scottish Bible Society to encourage young people to engage with the dynamic work of this nearly 200-year old charity.
Fiona Baker (29) comes originally from Anstruther. Married to Brian, she spent eight years working in America before settling in Edinburgh. She studied divinity at Aberdeen University and went on to become a youth and college minister.
“Living with the iPod generation means the Bible is increasingly faced with the 'boring and irrelevant' label. So I face a really exciting challenge!” she says.
“I am thrilled to get stuck into the work of helping young people engage and interact with the Bible and its message, and the work of the Scottish Bible Society. I long to see young people captivated with the goldmine of adventure, poetry, history, gripping narrative, and brilliant imagery that makes up the story of God. My great hope is that we will increasingly see teenagers, students, and young adults taking the mission of the Society to heart and engaging in the work of getting the Bible and its message out to people across the globe.”
The national society – one of 141 linked throughout the world - has for nearly 200 years been responsible for ensuring that the Bible is promoted and ‘made available to all peoples in appropriate and relevant forms’.
Elaine Duncan, chief executive of the Scottish Bible Society, says, “I’m delighted to welcome Fiona to the staff. She brings a great enthusiasm and lots of obvious talent to the role. I am sure that she will soon start to make a real impact in Scotland as she works alongside youth leaders and young adults.
“We have a strong educational and schools programme though our Bibleworlds and now we can offer much more in the vital area of youth work.”
