C of S Moderator in centenary visit to Brora

Clyne church Brora

This coming weekend will see Clyne Parish Church in Brora celebrate a very special anniversary.

The Clyne Church building was opened and dedicated for public worship in June 1907 by the then Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Very Rev Dr Mitford Mitchell. Appropriately enough, the current Moderator, the Right Reverend Sheilagh Kesting, is set to join the centenary celebrations this weekend, when she will be preaching at a special anniversary service (11.00am, Sunday 24 June).

A special 100th ‘birthday cake’ has been baked for the occasion, and it will be served up to the congregation in the church hall directly after the morning service. Later in the day, local people will gather for a very special Centenary ‘Songs of Praise’ in the Church, to be held at 6.30pm.

The centenary celebrations are not confined to Sunday, however. The festivities will also include a Flower Festival, to be held in the Church on Saturday 23 June between 10.00am and midday.

The congregation of Clyne Church, Brora is part of the linked charge which also includes Kildoan & Loth Helmsdale.

Members of the congregation in Helmsdale will also be taking part in this weekend’s centenary events, where they will be joined by other guests including the Moderator of the Presbytery of Sutherland, the Rev John MacPherson (from Scourie), the Presbytery Clerk the Rev J Leslie Goskirk (from Lairg) and the former minister of Clyne, the Rev Alasdair MacLennan (who served in the parish from 1979 to 1987).
