400 years on: a fresh call to the Word of God
Next year is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible. A wide range of Christian organisations are involved in a joint initiative to 're-ignite and re-enthuse' a passion for the Bible as God's Word.
In an age of the sound-bite and video clip, Christian organisations including Scripture Union, the Highland Theological College, Wycliffe Translators and many others have rallied behind an initiative by the nationwide Evangelical Alliance with the aim of raising the level of biblical understanding in the churches.
To encourage a take-up of the initiative, a meeting is scheduled for the end of October in Inverness. One of those involved is the Scottish Bible Society's Inverness, Nairn and Moray representative Alasdair Moodie. On behalf of the Inverness Action Group, Alasdair writes:
During the summer we learned that the Scottish Bible Society has become one of the many partners with the biblefresh initiative being sponsored nationwide by the Evangelical Alliance. 2011 is the 400th anniversary since the publication of the King James Version of the Bible and therefore presents a unique opportunity for the Church to focus its attention on the Word of God. biblefresh is a movement of churches, agencies, organisations, colleges and festivals which has a vision to re-ignite and re-enthuse the church in it's passion for the Bible. For many in our churches the Bible has become tedious rather than treasured, trusted and true. The aim of the biblefresh initiative is to encourage a greater confidence and passion for Scripture across the Church. Churches are being asked to agree to raise the level of biblical understanding amongst their members by taking practical steps in four areas: Reading, Training, Translation and Experience. Ideas on how to deliver in these four areas will be provided. We live in exciting times. Please come together to this meeting, and gain useful suggestions for planning to bring this timely initiative into reality. Fred Drummond, the National Director for Scotland of Evangelical Alliance will attend and talk on what is happening in Scotland. Please join us and make biblefresh the major catalyst we need to re-engage with what God says to us.
Amongst those organisations in Scotland which are involved are Scripture Union Scotland, Highland Theological College, Tearfund, Wycliffe Bible Translators, Youth for Christ, Methodist Church, Baptist Union, Open Doors, Prospects, and The Faith Mission Bible College.
